Top marks also given to component production in Martin

Wolfsburg/Salzgitter, 08 June 2006 - The Volkswagen plant in Salzgitter is the automaker’s best European site when it comes to occupational safety. Volkswagen brand Board member Reinhard Jung and the General Secretary of the European Group Works Council Michael Riffel presented the 2005 Occupational Safety Trophy to the plant management on Wednesday. Component production in Martin, Slovakia, was also honored as the organizational unit with the best European performance in occupational safety.
Jung said: “Our employees can only develop their full creativity and potential in an environment they perceive as safe. That is why Volkswagen sets great store by occupational safety. It is an essential element of our corporate policy.”

Riffel added that occupational safety today called for a holistic approach. Technical measures and accident analysis alone were no longer sufficient. “The only employees who can produce the performance needed in ever-tougher international competition are those who work under healthy employment conditions in a safe and hygienic environment.”

Plant Manager Manfred Mazen accepted the trophy for Salzgitter. The plant produced outstanding results in the occupational safety audit. A special feature at the Salzgitter plant is the exemplary manner in which occupational safety is integrated in daily work at all organizational levels.

The component production business unit in Martin, Slovakia, was awarded the trophy for the best organizational unit of Volkswagen AG. Jung presented the trophy to the head of component production in Martin, Kersten Gaudlitz, and the Chairman of Volkswagen Slovakia, Thomas Schmall. Component production achieved the best audit results of all organizational units participating in the competition. The plastics technology unit at the Brunswick plant came second, and quality assurance at the Kassel plant was ranked third. Both units were presented with a certificate honoring their achievements.

Occupational safety at Volkswagen
The Volkswagen Occupational Safety Trophy has been presented every year since 1985 to the best plant and the best organizational unit of Volkswagen AG. In the past, the competition was only open to Volkswagen’s German sites. This year, however, all Volkswagen brand European plants can participate for the first time. The three best plants and organizational units are identified in a ranking based on accident statistics. These plants are then subjected to an audit to check the quality of occupational safety. Factors such as team spirit, working atmosphere and communication are also taken into consideration by the auditors in the overall assessment. The audit results are the sole basis for deciding on the plant and organizational unit to be awarded the trophy.
